60 & Sober

Over

S.M. Wagenaar

Glenn County Recovery

They say life begins at 40, but I'm here to tell you it gets even sweeter after 60. At 64, I'm relishing the joys of life, like being nearly 6 years sober, and my 18-pound white cat, Zipper, curled up on my lap.

Zipper's gentle presence and unwavering affection are a constant reminder to slow down and appreciate the small moments. He's my furry confidante, my late-night movie buddy, and the first to greet me at the door with a happy meow and a swish of his tail. We've even mastered the art of leash-walking, and our neighborhood strolls are always a hit with the kids who stop to admire his fluffy white coat.

Sober life after 60 offers a newfound sense of freedom and the opportunity to explore long-held passions and interests. Whether it's traveling to new destinations, delving into creative pursuits like painting or writing, or simply spending more quality time with loved ones, the possibilities are endless. It's a time to rediscover ourselves, try new things, and embrace the adventures that await us... sober.

With decades of experience under our belts, we have a wealth of wisdom and perspective to share with the world. We've learned valuable life lessons, faced challenges with resilience, and discovered what truly matters. Now, we have the chance to mentor younger generations, pursue personal passions, and simply enjoy the fruits of our labor.

Wisdom

There are health challenges to face, losses to grieve, and adjustments to be made. But with age comes a certain wisdom and perspective that allows us to navigate these challenges with grace and resilience. We've learned to appreciate the present moment, to cherish our loved ones, and to find joy in the simple things.

Embrace a New Pace

So, to all those who are approaching or have already reached this milestone, I say this: embrace this chapter with open arms. It's a time of joy, growth, and endless possibilities. Life after 60 isn't just about slowing down; it's about embracing a new pace, one that allows us to savor each moment, cherish our connections, and live life on our own terms.
