Food as Medicine
 Nourishing Bodies and Communities

At PneumaCare Health we recognize the power of food to heal and restore. It's not just about calories, but about providing the body with the essential nutrients it needs to thrive. This is why the "Food as Medicine" approach, a key component of the CalAIM initiative, is gaining momentum across California.

CalAIM (California Advancing and Innovating Medi-Cal) is a long-term commitment to transform healthcare for those enrolled in Medi-Cal, especially those with complex needs. It goes beyond traditional medical care by addressing the social factors that influence health, such as access to nutritious food. By supporting programs that provide healthy meals and nutrition education, CalAIM is helping individuals like Mary take control of their health.

Mary, a Colusa County resident with 2 years of sobriety is living with diabetes, struggled to manage her condition. Limited income and mobility made it difficult to access fresh produce and prepare healthy meals. But thanks to CalAIM, Mary now receives medically tailored meals delivered right to her door. These meals are not only delicious but also designed to meet her specific dietary needs.

"I used to feel so tired and sluggish," Mary shares. "But now that I'm eating these healthy meals, I have more energy and my blood sugar levels are more stable. I feel so much better."

Mary's story is just one example of how "Food as Medicine" is making a difference in communities across California, including right here in Glenn County.

Individuals and families are benefiting from:

  • Medically tailored meals: These programs provide customized meals to individuals with specific health conditions, helping them manage their conditions and improve their quality of life.

  • Community healthcare workers, nutrition counseling and education: Registered dietitians and nutritionists can offer personalized guidance and support, empowering individuals to make informed food choices.

  • Community gardens and farmers' markets: These initiatives increase access to fresh, affordable produce and foster a sense of community.

The "Food as Medicine" movement is transforming the way we think about food and health. It's about recognizing that food is not just sustenance, but a powerful tool for healing and recovery. And as CalAIM continues to expand access to these vital programs, more individuals like Mary will have the opportunity to experience the transformative power of food.
